5 Yard Sign Mistakes That Are Costing You Business

August 28, 2026

Yard signs look simple. Plant a sign, get noticed, done. But we see the same handful of mistakes over and over — on real estate signs, campaign signs, event signs, you name it — and every one of them quietly costs whoever put that sign in the ground a few extra customers, votes, or leads.

1. Text That’s Too Small to Read From the Road

If someone has to slow down to read your sign, most of them won’t bother. A yard sign has about two seconds to make its point to a passing car. Your business name, phone number, and one clear message should be readable at a glance — everything else is optional.

2. Low Contrast Colors

A dark blue logo on a black background looks great on a screen and disappears completely from thirty feet away in direct sun. High-contrast pairings — dark text on white or yellow, white text on a bold color — are what actually get read at driving speed.

3. Flimsy Material for a Long Job

A thin sign in a high-traffic yard for a six-week campaign or a season-long listing won’t make it. Corrugated plastic and aluminum composite (ACM) hold up to wind, rain, and mowers a lot longer than the bargain-bin option, and replacing a faded sign halfway through the job costs more than ordering the right one the first time.

4. No Clear Call to Action

“For Sale” tells people what’s happening. “For Sale — Call Tina 419-905-5332” tells them what to do next. The best yard signs we build always answer the question “okay, now what?” in the same glance as the headline.

5. Ordering One When You Needed Twenty

One sign in one yard reaches the people who drive past that yard. A real estate brokerage, a countywide campaign, or an event with multiple entrances all need signage placed everywhere the audience actually is — which usually means ordering in bulk, not one at a time.

Getting a yard sign made right the first time is a lot cheaper than reordering it. If you’ve got a batch to get out — real estate, campaign, event, or just a sign for the truck — let’s get it done right.
